Hey,
As you MAY have noticed, I haven't posted for a while now....for a lot of reasons which I don't find necessary to mention. Anyway I decided to put Stoned Sun Vibrations on hiatus and concentrate my efforts to Downtuned Magazine ('n' Radio). Many of you probably know that Downtuned Mag is dedicated to the Greek heavy rock scene but since I've started Downtuned Radio too, I'm thinking of including posts about releases from all over the world. Apparently I'm going to keep a ratio but we'll see how it'll evolve.
From now on, you can find me on Downtuned Mag. And for any bands interested in reviewing/including them in radio's rotation etc., you can come in touch with me through the contact form over there. As I wrote above. I'll try to keep a ratio and at least in the beginning I'll try to "promote" mostly "smaller", more independent bands that deserve your attention.
So I want to thank each and everyone of you out there who supported, read, promoted and helped this blog. Also a big fat thanks to all the bands which helped SSV in their own way.
That's all for now folks! Thanks again! Maybe SSV will be back someday. Or maybe Downtuned will become better than SSV.... Who knows.
Be well and stay heavy!
Cheers,
Thanos
PS: Rock Trips Mixtapes will be back soon.... They'll be the only thing posted from now on. Perhaps some other personal comps too.

Suplecs - Mad Oak Redoux (2011)

New Orleans' Suplecsd are back after quite a few years with their fourth album which is a rocket of anger in our heads. I guess a part of their feelings, traumas and experiences by Hurricane Katrina are concentrated in "Mad Oak Redoux". It seems to me that this is a more mature and compact work with many different elements inside it. Of course they didn't loose their aggresion and "madness" but they broaden their horizons in more melodic paths and generally bring their songwriting a few levels up.

Noctum - The Seance (2010)

Swedish Noctum's first album it's a great trip back in 70's heavy rock/proto-doom era. The point with this band is that they aren't a copy of bands of the past but they are excellent inspired songwriters. They succeed to pass us this retro vibe pf early 70's. Apparently, it seems that they have studied very well bands like Black Widow,Coven and early-Pentagram but also bands of N.W.O.B.H.M like Witchfinder General and Diamond Head. Here we have a classy album, with excellent playing on inspired songs and a dusty production to complete the album's spirit. Don't miss this.

Wo Fat - Noche del Chupacabra (2011)

Wo Fat's third release is an absolutely amazing album in the way they get used us with their two previous works. Monstrous, heavy stoner jams with the right amount of psych are here to drag us into the Wo Fat-swamp.Amazing riffs, psych solos, bass lines hitting like thunder and great groovy drumming, deliver us one of the best records of this year (even if it's quite early to make such statements). You know what Wo Fat stands for,so let's leave the reviews and check this out. Congrats guys.

Verma

Verma is a promising kick-ass psych band from Chicago,US. Their music is like a drunk, stoned giant trying to reach God by crushing and tearing apart every planet gets in his way. Their two releases is an excellent piece of work,a heavy psych/kraut absolutely hypnotic, fully hallucinatory masterpiece. It's a "devastating" listening which must be handled with caution..Welcome to space.Welcome to Verma's sound system.

TOTR - Rock 'n' Roll Side (2011)

TOTR is hard rock band from Moscow,Russia and this is their first album (they released an EP in 2008). While other bands try to experiment in their music, TOTR stay faithful in their roots and refresh and bring the spirit of 70's hard rock music in 2010's. So if you are fan of Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple and Grand Funk Railroad check them out and you will be pleased. Great music for party, drinks and some air-guitar and stuff I think. Cheers!

HOME - HOME EP (2010)

Home is an Austrian three-piece band and this is their debut EP,released some months ago (Thanks guys for contacting me). Well they play a mixture of hardcore, sludge and psych (as the guys describe themselves) and I agree with that. Hardcore is the main body in which they build their music(especially the vocals which are raw and strong). Then, doses of sludge and psych come and enrich their music, make it more powerfull and heavy. In my opinion, this is a high voltage release and these guys show us that they have great potentials. This is the re-release of their EP,which contains two quite different remixes of the song "Dice Game" and another live track("Patricia").Keep on HOME.

Widowland - Widowland (2011)

Debut  for Widowland from St.Petersburg,Russia is a high-energy stoner rock album. Great mid-tempo riffs, inpired tracks, generally it's a release that will make you have a good time listening to it. The first times I heard it, the vocals seemed a little bit weird but I get used to it pretty quick. Good promising compositions and great artwork too. Cheers!

Sleepin Pillow

Sleepin Pillow is a six-member band from Thessaloniki,Greece. Their two albums is a experimetal/progressive journey with some post-rock elements and influenced in parts by Greek traditional and eastern music. The point is that they're really something progressive by creating their own paths in musical world and I think that you'll find difficulty to resemble with any other bands. They experiment in their sound without making you feel tired and the traditional instruments and eastern scales are being used with, let's say, economy, only to give a different feeling and a mystery. Two absolutely professional, unique works by this promising band are enough to travel your mind and thoughts in places that you've never been.

24.1.11

Devil - Magister Mundi Xum (2010)

Heavy doom rock straight from Norway! These guys don't reinvent the wheel or something, they just play great heavy rock in the veins of Sabbath,Pentagram,Witchfinder General. They manage to create a great retro atmosphere and make you move your head up and down without any exaggerations or by selling their image. The EP is just 23mins so the replay button will be used quite a few times. The point is that with bands like Ghost and the noise behind their releases, some really decent efforts like this EP,don't get the attention they deserve(in their own musical cirle of course). I mean that playing occult doom/heavy rock is kind of a hype now and most of the bands seem a little fake to me,trying to sell the style and all these shitty kind of stuff. I can't say the same thing with these guys. So,check them out as we are waiting for their LP (They're also going to support Electric Wizard on their first tour days).Cheers!

Disappears - Guider (2011)

Second full album from Chicago based Disappears, it a great example of lo-fi drone reminding me a mix of Velvet Underground and Spacemen 3. Each track is "lost" in drums and a few guitar hords and it soaks you in it's dense fuzzy world.

Shrinebuilder recorded this song("Science of Anger") when they got stuck in New York after the Iceland volcano eruption of this past April. They gave a live there and recorded the song for Coextinction Recordings as they have worked it in this gig. As expected, it's another great 13-minute sample of Shrinebuilder's work. Check it out.

Blue Aside - The Orange Tree (2010)

This EP was a totally surprise to me! When I got it, I didn't expect such a great strong EP. And I want to believe that it's only the begining. This Boston,US trio mixes up good progressive with doom and sludge and they create one of the most interesting things I have heard of the last few months. Smart music and smart lyrics, sometimes down-tempo sometimes reaching to a psych crescendo. Well, I would need quite a big text to describeas I wanted to so I let you to discover their strength.Check them out and you'll find your music company for quite a long time.

The Might Could - The Might Could (2011)

The Might Could is a heavy as hell new band  and this is their debut album. It's the collaboration of four great guys: Erik Larson(Parasytic, Hail!Hornet, ex-Alabama Thunderpussy),Ryan Wolfe (formerly of Facedowninshit),TJ Childers (Inter Arma) and Rob Gouldman (Lord).Kick-ass heavy rock'n'roll punch you in the face and bourbon-fueled riffs makes you wanna drink your weight in whiskey. With Erik in lead vocals(this guy should have taken up the vocals in Alabama Thunderpussy too),the excellent riffs, the frenzy Dixie-driven drumming and the thick bass,by the end of the album you surely get drunk only by the music. In my opinion, it's a great fill in the gap which Alabama Thunderpussy has left behind. Cheers!

Double Space is a destructive, furious, killer sludge trio from Denmark. Two guitarists and one drummer combine sludge, stoner and noise into it's most efficient form that blasts your ears and brain. Two tracks are enough for a massive earthquake that it will take place in your room in front of your player. That's something I suppose...

Blackbird Raum

Blackbird Raum is a local band from Santa Cruz,California and their kind of music is a mixture of country, cajun, folk and punk with many gypsy elements. They're actually street performers and the instruments used for their music are banjo, accordion, washtub bass, washboard, saw, mandolin and of course scream, they actually scream until they die..Their lyrics are focused on social issues from war to ecology and back. For my musical taste they're really awesome and they create something unique, like Nausea decides to play a country mixture. Well, give them a try(especially their 2 last albums) and I think you all will find something to like in their music.

Mugstar

Mugstar is one of the most remarkable and astonishing space/kraut rock bans of our era. Formed in Liverpool,England and since then they released a bunch of 7''s,EPs and three full albums. They play an excellent piece of  psych/space rock flirting with bands as early Floyd,Hawkwind,Neu!,Spacemen 3,Loop and Wooden Shjips. Their music is sometimes druggy, mesmerizing and sometimes heavy, intense, majestic. They transfer you to a trance state where the dreams and the visions become one with reality. They hypnotize you in a alternate kraut universe where everything can happen. For me they are in the table's head of modern space-rockers like Gnod,White Hills,Bardo Pond,Sleepy Sun,Titan and 3 Leafs.
I managed, except from the 3 albums,to find one 7''(Bethany Heart Star),the split with Mudhoney and their Peel Session. So,if anyone have anything from their other EPs I would be grateful to share it with me.

Echoes Of Yul

Coming from Poland,Echoes of Yul is a duo who really likes slow motion tunes. It's quite hard to describe their music. Maybe it's like post metal, but there are a few doom riffs.Maybe it's drone.Maybe it's post rock. Maybe it's all of them or maybe nothing. The only thing I'm sure it's that I enjoyed their music and I'm stuck at it. I can't include them into labels and stuff. They're kind of reminding me a little bit of Earth and Godflesh. Just check them out, they are at least interesting and I believe you'll go through them again and again. They also released a split with Guantanamo Party Program and Sun For Miles, which consists of well-structured and good tracks but I prefer their album.Enjoy the darkness.

Eight Hands For Kali

From the ashes of Great Coven, Eight Hands for Kali came to this world to spread their monolithic toxins. They take us to a trip to an opium-addict's mind. They lead us to psych mindfucking tidal waves. As you are listening to their music, you feel the air filled up with smoke and the things around you to freak out.Droney sounds, crushing riffs and the guidance of Kālī are all you need. EHFK released one EP and a full-length,which actually is a 55-min track(you can hear Brant Bjork in it) before they split up. Fans of Sleep and YOB must dig this up!

Savage Republic

"Savage Republic was a seminal Los Angeles Tribal-Industrial-Art-Punk band from the 1980s, currently reformed and active with a different line-up. They were influenced by a diverse array of music, including Glenn Branca, Can, DNA, Amon Duul, PiL, The Pop Group, Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Ventures and Flipper, as well as a variety of ethnic music from around the world. Their sound and aesthetic approach resonated alongside contemporaries such as Einsturzende Neubauten,Sonic Youth and the Butthole Surfers.
In 2005 Savage Republic reformed, albeit without “leader” Bruce Licher, touring the U.S. west coast. The band now consists of post-1983 “core” members Greg Grunke, Thom Fuhrmann and Ethan Port, as well as drummer Sterling Fox (who performed in several post-Savage Republic projects with this trio). The massive Glenn Branca-inspired guitar shimmering still remains.“1938”, their first studio album in nearly two decades, was released on Neurot Recordings in October 2007."
