Hey,
As you MAY have noticed, I haven't posted for a while now....for a lot of reasons which I don't find necessary to mention. Anyway I decided to put Stoned Sun Vibrations on hiatus and concentrate my efforts to Downtuned Magazine ('n' Radio). Many of you probably know that Downtuned Mag is dedicated to the Greek heavy rock scene but since I've started Downtuned Radio too, I'm thinking of including posts about releases from all over the world. Apparently I'm going to keep a ratio but we'll see how it'll evolve.
From now on, you can find me on Downtuned Mag. And for any bands interested in reviewing/including them in radio's rotation etc., you can come in touch with me through the contact form over there. As I wrote above. I'll try to keep a ratio and at least in the beginning I'll try to "promote" mostly "smaller", more independent bands that deserve your attention.
So I want to thank each and everyone of you out there who supported, read, promoted and helped this blog. Also a big fat thanks to all the bands which helped SSV in their own way.
That's all for now folks! Thanks again! Maybe SSV will be back someday. Or maybe Downtuned will become better than SSV.... Who knows.
Be well and stay heavy!
Cheers,
Thanos
PS: Rock Trips Mixtapes will be back soon.... They'll be the only thing posted from now on. Perhaps some other personal comps too.

Left Lane Cruiser - Junkyard Speed Ball (2011)

Get ready for another high speed country cruise to US south with Left Lane Cruiser as our drivers. Bluesy,groovy,punky,stompy,high-voltage music as they get us used to. The addition of keyboards (by Reverend James Leg aka John Wesley Myers) in 5 songs was an excellent touch. Damn, this is GOOOD! Cheers!

Enjoy!

Boris with Merzbow - Klatter (2011)

Another collaboration between Merzbow and Boris (it's the sixth). Actually, it's a 2007 recording but never released then so its time has now came. You know what to expect, harsh noise, raw heavy rock and a kraut feeling. In its 5 tracks it contains two re-recorded versions of "Akuma No Uta", "Naki Kyoku" and "Akuma No Uta". It's a vinyl only release limited to 1000 copies. Check it out while the other Boris' new releases are on their way.

Enjoy!

Consular - Creep (2010)

These guys from Miami,US know how to make fine pieces of sludge(-core). They execute you with riff after riff, rhythm is thick as wall, strong grooves and the vocalist just tear his throat apart and delivers it in a sludgy plate. Good stuff.

Enjoy! or Enjoy!

SubRosa - No Help For The Mighty One (2011)

New album from Utah's female dominated SubRosa and it's a really interesting work. In the beginning, it sounded a little confusing for me but after a couple of minutes things changed. Downtuned doom rock with the violins make the difference by giving the music an air of majesty and sadness at the same time. Great (female) vocal harmonies, strong songwriting and music's dark air make the songs stuck in your head. I think that this is SubRosa's best release since now and it's quite unique by pushing the boundaries of doom sound a little further.

Enjoy!

Six Organs Of Admittance - Asleep On The Floodplain (2011)

Time for some relaxing, peaceful music from the new Six Organs Of Admittance's new album. A journey into tranquility of your mind,a kind of meditation feeling the music's harmony. A release which catches you with the simple beauty of the acoustic guitar (the core of all songs). An hypnotic quiet gem which needs attention.

Take A Look:

Purling Hiss

These guys from Philadelphia was a great finding,I have to say. Actually, Purling Hiss is Mike Polizze's (guitar,Birds Of Maya) band and it's pure psych rock at its finest form. Three releases in a small period of time  While the "Public Service Announcement" stays in more lo-fi paths(but still remains great),the other two "Purling Hiss" and especially "Hissteria" are...BOOM! Filthy ear-bleeding "cacophony" psych, full of fuzzy guitars, menacing vibes erupting from your player and kicking out your heart. We're talking about amplifier worship here. Check out all their releases no matter what.

22.2.11

Monster Magnet..the early early years

Three early releases of Monster Magnet. The first one is "Love Monster" from 1988 (but released in 2001) which is written and recorded from Dave Wyndorf before Monster Magnet was formed.  The other two ("We're Stoned,What Are You Gonna Do About It" and "Forget About Life, I'm High On Dope") are from 1989 and they're cassette recordings. At this point M.M. were : Dave Wyndorf (Guitar,Vocals), John McBain (Bass), Tim Cronin (Drums,Vocals). They are must-have releases for all fans of Spine of God era. Cheers!

*Here is a better quality of the previous upload. Credits to Tetsuo The Cat,for ripping and editing this one

BONUS:
Here are the releases of Wyndorf's band before Monster Magnet along with Phil Caivano and Daniel Rabinowitz. They released two 7"s in 1979 ("Combat Love") and 1981 ("Go Cruisin'") and a selftitled EP in 1984. Don't expect anything like Magnet's stuff, only a glam-punk-powerpop kind of thing.

Lvmen - Mondo (2006)

Lvmen is a great Czesch band in the spirit of Neurosis and Isis post-circles but they have anything to do with all these bands which really have me tired of listening to all the same copied things again and again. Lvmen is a hidden gem in our music world and they are far better of all these schemes who try to create contemplative musical suites that supposed to be masterpieces of atmosphere and shit like that. As I read in a review somewhere they're like: "So say Neurosis and Isis had a baby and Talk Talk and Slint had a baby, then those babies met and had a baby, and that baby met the baby of Godspeed and Pg.99 and they had a baby. Thats Lvmen."  This is their third release and if you are into in Pelican,Ocean,Isis I guarantee that you will love them and you'll understand why they are far better.

Enjoy!

Demonic Death Judge

Mighty monstrous raw stoner/sludge from Finland with some psych Ufomammut-ish parts attached in it. Further description seems unneeded. A must-check band for all bearded "music-weeders" out there, members of Iron Monkey-Eyehategod-Bongzilla-Electric Wizard well-respected society. Cheers!

Arbouretum - The Gathering (2011)

Arbouretum's new release is a magnificent piece of work and I think you should listen to it. My fellow mate from "Wine,Women & Song" just brought this up so go and check it.

Get it from Wine,Women & Song : Arbouretum - The Gathering

Lord Vicar & Griftegård - Split (2011)

Lord Vicar and Griftegård split featuring two new songs. Lord Vicar's contribution is "Do You Believe" which is actually a cover of Cardigans' same-titled song and Griftegård's is "A Deathbed For All Holy". Doom on.

Enjoy!

Rabbits - Lower Forms (2011)

New release for Rabbits which stands in a sludge-punk-hardcore crossroad. This album is actually as raw as it takes. You can feel its aggression from the first minute. Only a pinch of melody here and there and the vocals are just shouting and screaming in a punk/hardcore way. In most cases,I don't think that I could have liked an album like that but for this one I have to make an exception. Maybe it's the nerve, the aggression and the vibrant feeling that gives me.

Sun Of Nothing - The Guilt Of Feeling Alive (2011)

"The Guilt of Feeling Alive" is Sun of Nothing's latest release and surely their most complete work. One of Creece's finest releases for this year (along with Brotherhood's of Sleep "Dark As Light"). It's quite difficult to categorize this album.Sludge,doom,post-something,black,noise, they all are members of this rich and fine album. They create a nihilistic, suffocating atmosphere which is ready to swallow each piece of you in the abyss and it's quite more aggressive than their previous releases. You should listen to it and feel the experience.

The Cutthroats 9

The Cutthroats was a band formed by Chris Spencer of Unsane, back in 2000 when Unsane took a break. Dave Curran (Unsane) was a member too. They released one single, one album and one EP. Well,if you like Unsane you are going to love these works. In my opinion Cutthroats 9 were more aggresive, meaner and more powerful than Spencer's other band. Pure destruction right up in your face.

Ocean Towers - Chapter I (2011)

Awesome heavy psych stoner release from Halifax,Nova Scotia,Canada. First work from these guys and it's such a groovy shit. They give it for free through bandcamp and it's something that you should check. As they say: "Feel free to download the album for $0 dollars. The name of the game is "get the tunes out there". Help yourselves...free music!".

Orchid - Capricorn (2011)

Get ready for some sweet Sabbath rock. San Francisco's heavy rockers Orchid gives us a fine album of vintage Sabbath sound and spirit. All of you will catch yourself thinking "oh,that sounds familiar, yes it's like Sabbath" while listening to "Capricorn" but Orchid succeed to recreate that feeling on their own terms and in the end producing a fresh and vital sound. Maybe that's a contradiction but that's due to band's ability to write such a catchy and powerful melodies. No matter of what kind of rock you are keen on, I strongly suggest this to anyone and you won't disappointed.

Audionom

Audionom it's not the usual kind of bands I post here, however it doesn't stop to be great music for my ears. They were formed back in 1999,in Stockholm Sweden. They released a few splits and two albums. If you're a fan of kraut rock,prog,new-wave,punk and garage maybe sometime in your life you have though how will it be to hear all these genres in one piece. Well, Audionom is the answer to your thoughts. I think that if you're open-minded to new things you'll not be disappointed at all with these guys. Kraut-Joy-Division-esque-new wave-electro-punk is the word.

Signo Rojo - Signo Rojo (2011)

Signo Rojo is a four-piece Swedish band formed in 2009. They stand with one foot in sludge and with the other in post-metal,encriched  with some huge toxic doom riffs. Well the thing with this band is that while our ears are somehow tired of all this post-metal music deluge us for quite a long time now, these guys are surely worth listening. Mid-tempo riffs are the base with some more slow parts making the swamp even deeper. At times you'll see a doom'n'roll feeling while other times you'll feel the Neurosis vibe. They don't reinvent the wheel but it's at least a decent debut,well-played,tight,atmospheric and with good production.Cheers!

Brotherhood Of Sleep - Dark As Light (2011)

Welcome to Brotherhood of Sleep! At last the second album of this Greek trio. This release is magnificent. 50 minutes of instrumental stoner/psych/experimental (name it exactly if you can) jams that just burst with glory, powerhouse riffing and excellent musicianship. The guitar explodes like a fuzzy doomish supernova, the bass lines make the music strong as steel with their groovy Sleep-ish vibes, the drums with their creative bits and jazz passages complete the deed and the vocals..fuck it who needs vocals. In my opinion, it's going to be in my best releases' list for this year. If you like Colour Haze, Los Natas (Toba Trance era) and Karma to Burn kind of stuff, you're gonna love this.Cheers!

Consecration

For bands like Consecration I think there is no justice in this world. And that's because quality bands like these guys from Serbia should be known worldwide and labels should stand in line to sign them. Maybe it sounds excessive but I believe that they are at the same level as Isis, God Is An Astronaut and Godspeed You Black Emperor. It's from the few times that I didn't find any negative element in their music, from the heavy parts which hit you like to the more melodic pscych proggy paths. Well, to be honest I lack of words to describe them the right way. Just listen to them and especially their second release which is stronger and really manages to transfer the energy of a live performance inside your room. You can download "Aux" for free from their bandcamp too and ".Avi" for only 3 fucking euros for christ's sake (actually for a great disc like that,it's more like a robbery in Consecration's house).
